Family emergency plan

Agree how you'll get alerts, where you'll shelter, how you'll leave, and how you'll find each other.

Answer five questions together

  1. 1How will we receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  2. 2Where will we shelter if we need to stay put?
  3. 3What is our evacuation route if we need to leave?
  4. 4How will we contact each other if we're apart?
  5. 5Does our emergency kit need updating?

Plan for your household

  1. 1Think about ages, anyone you care for, medical and dietary needs, devices and equipment, languages, pets, and where everyone usually is during the day (school, work).
  2. 2Pick a meeting place near home, and one outside your neighbourhood.
  3. 3Choose a contact who lives out of the area. When local lines are busy, a long-distance call or a text often gets through.
  4. 4Write it down. Make a wallet card for each person (you can make one here).

Practise

  1. 1Walk through the plan with everyone, including how to get out of the house and where to meet.
  2. 2Review it once a year.
